The Unadvertised Job Market

With redundancies and downsizing on the increase and organizations cutting back on their advertising dollars, it’s easy to think that no opportunities exist any more.

I am going to show you that is simply NOT TRUE.

Even with unemployment at 7.3pc in the euro region, 6.1pc in the US and 4pc in Japan (Aug 2008), there are still many, many millions of people in work and changing jobs every day. We usually think of this as the hidden job market where there are unadvertised jobs.

Within that massive number of people who are employed, people are changing jobs, getting sick, even dying and others moving away or getting promoted! And that means opportunity - if you know what to do!

There are lots of great jobs, not just low-paid service industry jobs but real jobs that you want; you just need to know how to find these hidden jobs and how to work the hidden job market! How To Find Hidden Jobs That No-One Else Knows About

Leadership Through Being Yourself

By Peter Fisher

Leadership is mostly about being yourself and maintaining your personal authenticity rather than about learning some formula from a text book. Aspiring leaders need to be always true to themselves; not slavishly following other’s ideas. That is not to say that role models can not be powerful exemplars.

Real leaders are not only prepared to reveal their weaknesses, because they know they are not super-human, but to use them to their advantage. Obviously this doesn’t mean revealing technical weaknesses or functional failings as this would fatally flaw their performance. Instead, what is meant is that leaders can and perhaps should, reveal their personality quirks – maybe they are bad tempered in the morning, are somewhat shy with new people or even a little disorganized. Such admissions show they are human and this resonates with others confirming that the leader is a person – not merely a role-holder.

Revealing their true selves, leaders can allow others to know and help them and this makes for better teamwork; followers can also feel better if they’ve got something to complain about. Thus by sharing at least some of their weaknesses, leaders can prevent others from inventing damaging problems.

Leader or Manager?

Are you a Leader or a Manager? Do you know the difference?

If it is your aim to move from simply being a manager to being a true leader, you will find out here how to go about it.

When you become a ‘Leader’ your word is your bond - you must know that when you speak, you will fulfill your promise to others and others will know they can depend on you. Think before you speak. Make a habit of under-promising and overdelivering. always keep your promises. Think about the kind of person you would want to deal with and be that person yourself.

Leadership -v- Power

Don’t make the mistake of associating supervisory positions, or seats of power, with leadership. This presumes that these two things are synonymous and while this can be the case, leadership and power are wholly separate issues. In reality, even if you are the boss, you may not have all of the power, or be capable of handling it, even if you did possess all of it.

For a while, we were told leadership was all about setting clear objectives and holding people accountable. Then the pendulum swung away to focus on “soft” leadership skills, such as empowerment, coaching and mentoring. But what is leadership? Read more at What is Leadership?
